Host: The Natural Step Monona. Film: “Fresh” with short “Sugaring.”

“Fresh” (film, 70 min.) celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.

Among several main characters, “Fresh” features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur’s 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan’s book, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma;” and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy.

With Climate Wisconsin short “Sugaring”.

On February 18 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., families can create art from recyclables, take quizzes, start seeds, see a model train, make buttons, test their smarts about how much energy household items use, compare transit options, and energize themselves at the Monona Public Library. The final Energ!ze Monona event in a series of six, “Families Go Green” is a family-friendly afternoon of fun that will engage young and old in activities designed to enlighten about energy.

Mayor Bob Miller will offer opening remarks to start off the festivities at 1:00. A brief Jeopardy-style game show presenting The Natural Step framework will follow. Then enjoy a variety of activity stations set up around the library, and get your Green Machine tickets stamped at each station. Energy information and thought-provoking questions for adults and children will go hand-in-hand with each fun activity.

Great door prizes include a $100 gift certificate from MG&E that the winner can apply to their utility bill, a tote bag from Willy Street Co-op filled with $100 worth of locally-produced goods, $85 of bicycle accessories from Machinery Row Bicycles, and a $50 gift certificate from Brothers Main Appliance and TV.

Energy meters will be available for check out, so you can see just how much energy your home appliances use.
Any South Central Library System library card may be used for the meters and to borrow books and other materials that will be on display.

This free event is hosted by the City of Monona, the Monona Public Library, and The Natural Step Monona. Beverages will be provided. Register at www.mononalibrary.org/youth/index.html or call 222-6127.

This is the final Energ!ze Monona event in a series of six free City of Monona events created around the “25×25 Plan,” a blueprint for generating 25 percent of the energy the city uses from renewable resources by 2025. This plan came from Monona’s participation in the state Office of Energy Independence’s Energy Independent Communities program. (A short video overview of the program is here: http://blip.tv/city-of-monona-videos/25×25-presentation-5073649.)

You and Monona can do many things to make our community more resilient. Please join in working toward a more sustainable future.

“Carbon Nation” (86 min.) is a business film, a national defense film, an energy-reduction film. The heroes in the film are pragmatists. “Carbon Nation” is a documentary movie about climate change solutions. Even if you doubt the severity of the impact of climate change or just don’t buy it at all, this is still a compelling and relevant film that illustrates how solutions to climate change also address other social, economic, and national security issues. You’ll meet a host of entertaining and endearing characters along the way.

“For the Price of a Cup of Coffee” is a 15-minute documentary examining the life cycle of a paper cup and the repercussions of a society reliant on convenience. Why are fewer than 1% of coffee shop patrons bringing their own cups? Why do we have so much garbage, and where does it go? What is the true cost of a disposable culture? This film is full of information that all consumers should know about the products that we use every day, and the steps we need to make towards a more sustainable world.

With Climate Wisconsin short “Extreme Heat”.

“Waste Land” (film, 90 min.) Filmed over nearly three years, the Academy Award-nominated film “Waste Land” follows artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores,” self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s collaboration with these inspiring characters as they create images of themselves out of garbage reveals both their dignity and despair as they begin to re-imagine their lives. The film offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

Homo Toxicus (film, 88 min.) A global experiment is in progress, and we are the guinea pigs. Tons of chemicals are released into the environment every day. The average citizen is unaware of this daily exposure and the long-term effects toxic substances can have on living organisms. The majority of the 100,000 industrial compounds developed since World War II have never been tested for the type of consistent, low-level exposure we experience.

From the food we eat and the air we breathe, through contact with the skin, and in many cases passed from mother to infant in the womb, these compounds end up in us.

With intelligence and humor, Homo Toxicus explores the myriad links between these toxic substances and increasing health problems such as cancer, allergies, hyperactivity, and infertility and the inconsistent standards used for evaluation and regulation of chemical agents. The findings strongly challenge us to re-evaluate the laws and procedures currently in place to safeguard our health against man-made chemicals and potential environmental pollutants.

With Climate Wisconsin short “Ice Fishing”.
