Green your thumb. Green our community.

The new Community Landscaping Project will kickoff with a Seed Starting Class on March 18th. Those interested in participating are encouraged to start saving small containers, such as yogurt cups and the cardboard centers of toilet paper rolls. These will be reused and recycled for a more sustainable and inexpensive way to start seeds.

Participants will learn to start seeds for native plantings by starting some for the Community Landscaping Project. Seeds will be provided for the project and for your gardens. Learn how to pre-treat seeds, make your own starting pots, and inoculate legume species. Get hands-on practice, whether to learn more about gardening, help beautify our community, or just to have fun with neighbors.

The Community Landscaping Project is a joint effort of The Natural Step Monona and the City of Monona Parks and Recreation Department and is designed to create beautiful, sustainable plantings while engaging the community in hands-on participation and education. Starting with three native and edible planting beds at the Community Center grounds, this “learning and doing” project will include plant division and sharing, planting work days; a rain barrel installation demonstration; and seed-collecting and sheet mulching classes. Learn to make your own gardens greener by making the community’s gardens greener.
